Tony is a capo, or captain in the New Jersey Mob. Life and times are changing, both in the mob and in day-to-day life. Managing the family business the "old way" is becoming a thing of the past and Tony, like everyone else feels the change and is trying to adapt to it. In the first season, his psychiatrist, Dr. Jennifer Melfi plays a key role in Tony's mental health. He is the only son of Johnny Boy Soprano and is married to Carmela and has two children, Meadow and Anthony Jr. |
Carmela has been Tony's wife for 18 years and as most mobsters wives is not involved with the family business. Of course Tony's work is no secret since he discusses everything with her and she is always ready to give her advise and opinions. Raising two children in the 90's in this environment is no easy task and Carmela is constantly caught in between the struggle of maintaining a 'normal' family life with the life of a mob boss. |

The 16 year old daughter of Tony and Carmela. In most ways she's quite normal and has very open views when it comes to speaking her mind. Her openness of discussing sex and a variety of other current issues makes Tony quite uncomfortable but his constant correction of this has not had any type of effect. |
Anthony, Jr. is the younger son of the family. He spends most of his time as other adolesce: playing Nintendo and getting into all sorts of mischief. His sister Meadow begins hinting to him that his father is not your 'average' father. Anthony Jr. is a little to young to understand this but he is starting to see what this means as time goes on. |

Livia is Tony's mother. She's 70 years old and living in a retirement home which Tony put her in. She appears to be getting senile in her old age and her style and one-liners make her one of the most refreshing characters in the show. She is the widow of Johnny Boy Soprano and had three children, Tony and two daughters. |
Junior is Johnny Boy Soprano's older brother which makes him Tony's uncle. He still believes he has alot of power in the mob and attempts to persuade everyone else that this is the case. While noone says anything against this in the open, behind closed doors, he is treated as more of a figure-head or a puppet in some cases. |
Christopher Moltisanti , Pussy Bompensiero (Big Pussy), Silvio Dante and Paulie Walnuts. Christopher is the son of Carmela's sister. He has quite a temper and acts before he think much of the time. Pussy, Silvio and Paulie are Tony's life-long friends and allies. They represent the core of his operation. |
Jennifer is the psychiatrist who has been seeing Tony. He started seeing her because he was passing out and having dizzy spells. The sessions were very revealing about Tony's personal feelings and outlook. Things got out of control several times but he kept coming back. Eventually the word leaked out that Tony was seeing a psychiatrist and Junior as well as Livia started getting worried about what he was saying. Junior used this against him and put together a bungled plot to "whack" Tony. By the end of the first series, Tony told Dr. Melfi that her life was now in danger and that she had to get out of town. It was a very dramatic scene but she did take his advice and leave the office. |
