Episode 1 - The Season Premier
Air Date: January 10th, 1999
 

In the Season opener we meet Tony Soprano. He has a wife of 17 years, two adolescent children, an aging mother who's a widow. His occupation: A captain in the New Jersey mob.

The days of mob life are changing and the way things were done in the past don't really work anymore. Tony has a hard time coping with this change and becomes depressed that he may not be as big and powerful as the leaders in the past.

Trying to maintain some stability with all of the pressures of his life, Tony suffers from frequent anxiety attacks and is recommended to see a psychiatrist. He finally agrees but must keep it private due to his ties with the mob.

Tony's uncle Junior ordered a hit on Pussy Malenga at a restaurant. Tony didn't want this to happen so he had the restaurant where it was supposed to happen blown up.

A Czech mob tries to muscle in on the Sopranos' waste management business. Christopher Moltisanti, Tony's cousin murdered one of the Chechs and dumped his body Staten Island. In the mob, hits are supposed to be authorized but Tony did this on his own.

Episode 2 - 46 Long
Air Date: January 17th, 1999
 

Chris (Tony's cousin) and his friend Brendan Filone attempt to make extra cash by hijacking trucks. Unfortunately, the trucks and the goods belonged to someone who is paid by Uncle Junior for protection. Uncle Junior becomes outraged and insists that everything be returned and that he be offered some kind of tribute.

Carmela (Tony's wife) tells Pussy to recover a Saturn which was stolen from the parking lot of Anthony, Jr.'s school parking lot.

Tony's mother Livia's condition is getting worse. While in a buick, she broke her best friends hip and broke her own wrist. She also managed to set her kitchen on fire.set the kitchen on fire.

Episode 3 - Denial, Anger, Acceptance
Air Date: January 24th, 1999
 

The truck hijacking from the prior weeks episode is over but the owner of the trucking company, Comley gave his thanks to Tony rather than Uncle Junior.

Juniors friend, Mikey Palmice tells him that Tony should take care of Christopher and Brendan since they jeaporized his operation. He says that since they are Tony's "boys" he should take care if it. But since it's clear that Tony is not doing anything about it, Mikey suggests that someone else should handle it. Junior sounds quite interested in this suggestion.

Tony is filled with domestic problems of his own. Jackie Aprile is in the hospital with inoperable cancer. He also feels bad about the fire at the restaurant which was burned down to avoid Pussy's death. The restaurant owners, Artie and Charmaine Bucco, are close friends of Tony's and are now broke and going through another arson investigation for the Vesuvio fire.

Tony's new Hasidic partner had agreed to give Tony 25 percent of his motel in return for persuading his son-in-law to give his daughter a divorce. Tony, Silvio, and Paulie spent the night accomplishing this but then the partner tried to back out.

Meadow and her friend are studying for the SAT test and ask Christopher and Brendan for some crack to help them study. Christopher knows that he could get into serious trouble if he gets it for Meadow and refuses. Meadow tells him that if he won't give her some she'll just go somewhere else and find it. Christopher doesn't want this to happen so he reluctantly gives her some.

Livia is now at the Green Grove Retirement Community. Junior visits her and starts telling her of the problem he is having with Christopher and Brendan. Livia is not new at this. After all, she was married to Tony's father, Johnny Boy Soprano. She gives her opinion on the matter and the end result is that Junior takes action. Christopher is set up and goes through a mock-execution. Brendan however isn't that lucky...

Episode 4 - Meadowlands
Air Date: January 31st, 1999
 

Tony began having erotic dreams of his psychiatrist, Dr. Melfi. He also has an interest in her as to what she does outside the office and calls on his friend in the police department, Vin Makazian to follow her. Tony didn't tell him why he wanted her followed but just said he wanted some information.

Since this was not an unusual request, the detective just figured that Jennifer Melfi was a thorn in the side for Tony, Makazian and his partner pull Jennifer over while she was out driving on a date. Unfortunately for Jennifer's date, he ended up on the wrong side of Detective's fist and feet. The whole incident created emotional problems for Jennifer for quite some time.

Meanwhile, Christopher, leaving the emergency room after his beating, was frantic. He thought Tony had him mock-whacked for giving Meadow speed, but he's not sure. And when he went to Brendan's place for answers, he found him in the bathtub with a brand new hole in his head.

Tony become irate when he found out what happened and he rushes over to one of Junior's favorite eating place, the Sit-Tite Luncheonette. Junior's friend Mickey Palmice gets in the way only to have a parking ticket stapled to his body by Tony.

Junior, however remains strong and does not back down from Tony. They have a brief exchange with Junior's final words being: "The next time you come see me, come heavy or not at all".

This is now becoming a very bad situation. Tony meets with his boys to discuss what should be done and who should be in charge. Since Jackie Aprile has been in the hospital in a coma for some time, it's clear that he can no longer run things. Everyone agrees that Tony should take over but to keep old Junior happy, they plan to let him 'think' that he's in charge. This seems to be the best way out. Junior will feel important that he's running thing and it will take the heat off them from the FBI and place all the attention on Junior.

Tony's also deciding what to do about his therapist. Since his dreams about her and her reaction to the assault he's thinking about stopping the therapy. Carmela thinks that this is a terrible idea and threatens to leave him if he quits. At this point she still doesn't know that the therapist is a woman.

Anthony, Jr. starts having problems at school and is getting into fights. Although Anthony Jr. is not a fighter, he can't understand why the kids start backing down from him. He's still naive about his whole family situation until Meadow begins to drop hints to him as to what their father is into. This all seems rather unreal to Anthony Jr. but things slowly start to sink in.

Episode 5 - College
Air Date: February 7th, 1999
 

Tony and Meadow are off visiting colleges in Maine. While driving, they even have some candid discussions about the Family Business. Although Tony seems uneasy to talk about it, he realizes that he can't keep things a secret from his growing children.

Tony thinks he sees someone he knows from a long time ago. He suspects the person is Fabian "Febby" Petrulio. This is someone who turned informant and entered the Witness Protection Program and eventually left it. He follows the man and learns that he is known as Fred Peters, a travel agent. Finally when Tony is convinced the person is Petrulio, he attacks him and ends it all with a wire around his neck.

Back at home, Carmela is down with the flu. Father Phil drops by giving her some parish news. They spend the entire evening together, eating and talking. Tony's psychiatrist calls the house to rearrange an appointment. Carmela can hardly speak when she learns that Tony's doctor is a woman. After the call and more eating and drinking a sexual tension began to develop between carmella and father Phil. He ends up spending the night on the couch.

Upon Tony's return, Carmela lets him know that father Phil spent the night on the couch. She also lets him know that his 'woman' psychiatrist called. Tony is dumbfounded.

Episode 6 - Pax Soprana
Air Date: February 14th 1999
 
 

Junior Soprano is now the new Boss. He's running things his own way and it's upsetting everyone. All of the dealing Jackie Aprile made are no longer honored plus he's keeping much of the money to himself. in addition, Junior now want to tax Hesh, something which had never happened before.

Tony's captains want something done Tony to do something about it. Tony masterminded a plan leaving Junior out of the loop. He secretly met with Johnny Sack, a New York Captain to plot out what was to happen. There was to be a meeting between Hesh, Junior and Johnny Sack. At the meeting Junior fell right into the trap because he wanted to come out looking good and keep the New York Mafia happy so he made a deal with Hesh.

Everything turned out as planned and Tony and his Captains were happy. The bad news for them was that the entire event was secretly recorded by the FBI.

On the domestic from, Tony becomes impotent from the medication he is taking. His erotic dreams of his psychiatrist still continue. Tony and Carmela also celebrate a wedding anniversary.

Episode 7 - Down Neck
Air Date: January 21th, 1999
 

Although one of the more domestic episodes of the series, it lays a crucial groundwork for future events.

Anthony Jr. gets in trouble at school for stealing wine and showing up drunk at class. Both his parents are called in to see the principle. While Tony thinks Anthony' Jr.s actions are not a big deal, the school psychiatrist has other opinions. He says that Anthony may have an Attention Deficit Disorder and warns them that he may need special education if it's true.

This all brings up alot of memories for Tony, thinking about his own childhood and images of his father and Uncle Junior come to mind. It makes him wonder if Anthony Jr. is destined to lead the same lifestyle as he and his father did. He shares this with Dr. Melfi and she clearly states that this is not necessarily the case. Tony find it hard to believe her.

Anthony Jr. has to visit his Grandmother Livia at Green Grove every day for three weeks. On one occasion he tells her that he has to see the school psychiatrist. She thinks that is terrible news and totally uncalled for.

He says it's no big deal because his father is seeing a psychiatrist, too!
